Qualifications/Job Description

Under the general supervision of the Zoo’s General Curator and Consulting Veterinarian(s) this position provides technical and medical support/assistance in the care and treatment of all zoological specimens in the collection.  Responsibilities will include maintenance of veterinary facilities, equipment, veterinary records and supplies. Assisting with immobilizations, surgeries, treatments and radiology as directed.  Assisting with and performing laboratory tests on samples as directed. Assisting with the care and maintenance of neonate animals as required, as well as functional responsibility for animals residing in quarantine and veterinary holding units.

Under limited supervision providing a natural, safe, and healthy environment for the collection of animals.  Handling the distribution of animal diets to ensure proper nutritional levels are maintained.  Observing and monitoring animal behavior and natural activities to maintain their health and safety. Performing duties of a Zookeeper and assisting with the animal enrichment program as required. Performing other duties as assigned.

The essential functions of the position include:

Oversight of the animal health clinic under the supervision of the General Curator and Consulting Veterinarian and regular communication with both.  Maintain the MedARKS and ARKS computerized animal records.  Maintain inventories of drugs and supplies for the animal health clinic.  Perform fecal exams as required.  Perform diagnostic tests or send samples off for diagnostic testing.  Care for animals held in animal health clinic for treatment, quarantine, or temporary holding.  Assist veterinarian during rounds, routine and emergency exams, and perform minor veterinary health care procedures as instructed.  Assist zoo keeper staff as a relief keeper.  Provide a healthy environment by cleaning/disinfecting animal habitats, exhibits, cages, and holding facilities by sweeping, hosing, and washing.  Also clean floors and sidewalks, remove waste and litter, cleans ponds, rakes mulch, etc.  Provide species appropriate enrichment to animals in your care.

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by a two year degree from an accredited college or technical school in Veterinary Technology or its equivalent; registered Veterinary Technician or equivalent certification is required, (CVT or LVT). Candidate must have the ability to meet the physical demands of the position which included but are not limited to: prolonged standing, running, kneeling, and lifting 50 pounds. Must have a valid Driver’s License with a good driving record, as a driving record check will be required for this position. Salary range for this non-exempt position is $13.59 to 20.21 per hour.
