         Zoo Veterinarian

Organization: Akron Zoological Park

Location: Summit County (Akron), OH, United States

The Akron Zoo is in the process of transitioning from a contract veterinary service to a full time staff Veterinarian who will lead, manage and direct our veterinary care program.

 The Akron Zoo is located on over 50 acres in Akron, Ohio. Currently home to an animal collection of 184 species and over 2000 specimens, the zoo is currently engaged in the initial phases of exhibit design for our current master plan.  Our vision of an up close, personal animal experience for our guests, ensuring the best animal welfare, and conservation action is intrinsic to our design.  This position will be involved in the planning and review of the coming construction.

This position is a member of the senior animal management team and will participate in decisions concerning animal management and the zoo’s participation in research. Responsibilities include administration of the zoo’s veterinary care program and hospital. Provides preventive health management, medical and surgical care for the zoo’s collection in accordance with USDA, AZA, and AAZV regulations including quarantine protocols, vaccination, nutrition, necropsies, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, zoonoses, and medical record maintenance. Supervises the veterinary technician.

The qualified candidate will possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited university along with four years of veterinary care experience within a zoological institution. Must possess or obtain a valid State of Ohio Veterinary License, Ohio driver’s license and applicable Drug Enforcement Agency registration within 60 days of hire. Will be required to work occasional weekends and holidays and to respond to emergencies.

Must be an active team player, possessing excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with zoo staff, members of the public, donors, and media.
