| Qualifications/Job Description
The Jackson Zoological Society, Inc., is seeking qualified applicants to fill the newly established position of Staff Veterinarian.
The Jackson Zoo sits on over one hundred and ten acres in Jackson, Mississippi and is home to over two hundred species of animals. The Zoo will soon embark upon the development of a new master plan as we continue to improve our facility and expand our collection.
The Staff Veterinarian will report to the Deputy Director and be a part of the animal management staff. Responsibilities will include administration of the Zoo’s veterinary care program and hospital. Provide routine preventative health management, emergency medical and surgical care of the Zoo’s collection in accordance with USDA, AZA and AAZV regulations including quarantine protocols, vaccination schedules, necropsies, laboratory, radiology, zoonoses and medical record maintenance. Prescribes medications, and makes recommendations on diet and care of the collection. Currently one veterinarian technician will report to the Staff Veterinarian.
The successful candidate must be a team player who will work closely with the animal care staff in ensuring the best care possible for our animal collection. The Staff Veterinarian will be an active member of future planning for the zoo.
The qualified candidate will possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited university along with two years of veterinary care experience within a zoological institution. Must possess or obtain a valid State of Mississippi Veterinary License, driver’s license and applicable Drug Enforcement Agency registration within 60 days of hire. Will be required to work occasional weekends and holidays and to respond to emergencies.
